Shadowrun: Data Trails

ADD TO WISHLIST >

THE INFINITE FRONTIER

The last great undiscovered country is vast, wild, and weirder than you can possibly imagine. And it’s nearby, waiting, accessible by the press of a button, or a simple gesture, or even just a thought. The Matrix holds a whole lot more than selfies and cat videos—it has artificial intelligences, electronic ghosts of people formerly alive (or perhaps still living), and deep wells of pure data that can swallow you whole. Oh, and a copy of every secret ever recorded electronically. The possible rewards of exploration are great, and the dangers are greater.

Data Trails is the Matrix sourcebook for Shadowrun, Fifth Edition, offering more options for decker and technomancer characters, including qualities, programs, gear and more.

With detailed examinations of hacker culture, information on diving deep into immersive hosts, and briefings on the strange sites hidden in dark corners of the Matrix, Data Trails is a vital resource for any Shadowrun players involved in the omnipresent flow of information. Non-Matrix specialists have chances to get in on the adventures as well, with game details explaining how their skills and expertise translate into the wild virtual world.

Data Trails is for use with Shadowrun, Fifth Edition.

As a 5th edition technomancer: I like Data Trails. I’ve been seeing a lot of criticism of it over the last couple of weeks that isn’t fair. Sure there are problems. The MMRI echo is just a wordier version of the Mind over Machine echo from the main book. I also wish there were a few more toys. But…

The book does a great job of making sense out of the matrix. It finally makes hosts understandable. I love the Deeper and Deeper chapter. It brings roleplaying back into the matrix, instead of making it a tedious dice rolling contest against the GM, using rules that he doesn’t even understand. It also finally allows me to kill hosts. Data Trails describes the deep web, groups, gives awesome examples for run design, and offers a bit of fluff for rainy day afternoons.

If you’re coming to Data Trails hoping for new gadgets, I can see how you would be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a book that makes the matrix, host, dissonance, and a bunch of other stuff understandable,...See more

I just wish they would sell the Shadowrun trade mark to a company that cares about making a good game and not just trying to milk fans... Imagine Shadowrun made by Fantasy Flight Games?

At any rate, they have lost my faith when I purchased the magic supplement and ill wait for them to turn this around or sell the franchise.

That's a ghastly thought. It would either have cards or speshul dice tacked on. Would still be better than what Catalyst does though.

How about it going back to FASA, since they are up and running again. They've already reacquired a number of their old lines; EarthDawn and Fading Stars for off the cuff examples.

The new FASA is FASA in name only. It doesn't have any of the original people attached. Basically, Red Brick Designs acquired the name, and moved all their IP over to the new company. Also, the only old IP they have is Earthdawn. None of their other IP ever belonged to FASA.

For technomancer fans: There's pretty much nothing in this for them crunch-wise. Fluff-wise, sure, it's about the Matrix and you'll be able to read about interesting Matrix stuff. No problems there. But as a matter of actual game mechanics, technomancers can choose from the 15 or so qualities in the book, they 5 overcosted (naturally!) Complex Forms they can choose from, and 8 underpowered (of course!) echoes they can choose from. There are no streams from 4th edition, no new sprites, no gear/foci/etc. to actually make them the 'mages' of the Matrix, and no advanced echoes there were in Unwired. Basically they told players, "We know technomancers don't have a lot of options right now, but that'll all be fixed when Data Trails is released!" And then they released Data Trails and technomancers are barely even mentioned. Hooray.

Additionally, it uses Catalyst's new table of contents system, which is about as bad as World of Darkness's old one.

Have they ever had foci? I'm not sure they'd need one.

I'm reading the book now and will leave a detailed reviewed

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
